You’d better keep an eye on your bike in Amsterdam, or else someone will brand your bicycle saddle with a cheap plastic zadeldekje – Dutch for bicycle saddle cover. Supposedly to keep your saddle dry from the rain in return for some free advertisement. Clever, right?

Wrong. Unfortunately, the majority of these saddle covers sooner or later end up as waste in the streets, adding to our increasing plastic waste issues. This is because of a number of reasons. Many covers do not really keep your saddle dry, and even if they do, where do you keep the wet cover while you cycle? A lot of Dutch cyclist already own their own saddle covers, so what is the purpose of having two? Even if you want to use it, the quality is so bad that within a couple of uses it is already worn out, with holes in the cover and the elastic band stretched out so that the wind can easily take hold of it. Also, when you sit on them (although you are not really supposed to) the ink easily transfers onto your clothing. And who really enjoys riding around with an awful looking and worn out saddle cover of some company on your personal vehicle?

Inspired by the Dutch Ja/Nee/Nee-sticker campaign against unwanted advertisement, Zadeldankje is a saddle label concept to communicate to advertisers that you do not want their saddle cover on your bicycle saddle. By placing the label on  your saddle, we hope to reduce the number of unwanted saddle covers in the streets, as well make advertisers more aware of peoples aversion against this type of advertisement and its wasteful consequences.

– CreativeHeroes
