Did you know that bread is one of the oldest prepared foods? Here is one of our celebrated bread designs.

Bread is one of the oldest types of prepared food. Being able to bake your own bread connects you to the roots of mankind. The smell of freshly baked bread in the morning is delicious. Waiting for a bread to grow while being at work is fun. Bread baking is inspiring and experimenting with recipes can be quite rewarding. And did you know that home-baked bread is very affordable?

There are four basic constituents you need: flower, water, a bit of salt and yeast or desem. Desem (natural yeast) isn’t the most commonly known ingredient of bread, but it sure produces tasty breads (you might actually know it from sourdough bagels). To bake your own bread, you need a desem starter. There are some great tutorials on the web that explain how to make a desem starter [here and here]. One can also find a friend (your ‘desembuddy’) and clone a desem.

For breadmaking, four basic ingredients are needed:

  • 1 tablespoon of desem (preferably partially whole-wheat)
  • 500 grams of flower
  • 300 ml of water
  • some salt.

You can vary with this recipe endlessly, for instance by adding chickpea flower, oil, butter, nuts, raisins, cinnamon, sunflower seeds and other types of ingredients. The creativity starts here!
